So what's in a super food?

Some of the team recently visited the fantastic Tanya's Cafe in Kensington - a fantastic raw food cafe that's buzzing with life and zest.  This glossary that they produce really gives you a great insight into what superfoods are all about. Acai: a berry powder, full of potent antioxidants. Amazing for glowing skin and popular among athletes. Agave: a sweet nectar, naturally extracted from the inner core of the agave cactus-like plant. Algarroba: ground seeds of a pod, also known as Peruvian carob or mesquite meal. Full of protein and tastes like toffee. Baobab:a dried fruit powder from an African tree. A nutrition powerhouse with a tangy sweet, citrus-like taste. Bee pollen:While bee pollen isn't considered vegan, it is a raw product and an ultimate superfood. Contains all nutrients for endurance, vitality, treating allergies and boosting your immune system. Cacao: raw, real and unroasted chocolate powder, full of antioxidants and magnesium. Carob: a distinctively dark and sweet powdered pod, sometimes used as a cacao alternative if they are sensitive to stimulants in chocolate Chaga:highly prized in Russian herbalism, this medicinal mushroom powder is a top superfood for immunity with a simple earthy taste. Chia: a tiny but mighty seed, that was the survival ration of Aztec warriors. Masses of amino acids, fibre, antioxidants and Omega 3's. Chlorella: a powder of dried single-celled, blue-green algae, full of protein, iron and chlorophyll, amazing for detoxing heavy metals. Chlorophyll: a liquid derived straight from the most potent greens, it is an ultimate blood cleanser and energiser. Vivid green colour but so mild in taste that with a squeeze of lemon, you'll think you are drinking lemon water. Coconut H20: we crack open our own coconuts for the freshest raw coconut water, that's sweet, hydrating and full of electrolytes. Cordyceps: a Chinese natural plant food, it is a medicinal mushroom extract, that's good for the heart, performance and maintaining cholesterol.   Hemp seeds: earthy and nutty taste, full of Omega 3's, protein and carbohydrates, also free from any allergens including nuts. Lucuma:a dried and powdered fruit from Peru with a subtle maple syrup aroma and sweetness, full of beta carotene. Maca:Peruvians have been using this root vegetable for over 2,000 years as an energy enhancer. It's an adaptogen, a hormone balancer and a libido enhancer. Matcha: a bright green tea powder, used in Japanese tea ceremonies and contains at least triple the antioxidants of green tea, as you're ingesting the whole leaf. Medicine flower: potent extracts derived from raw nuts, flowers and fruits, and contain no alcohol or preservatives. Reishi: since ancient times, the Reishi medicinal mushroom was reserved for Emperors and Royals, because if its longevity effects. Still ranked as a number one herb, it has a mild Bovril-like flavour. Spirulina: the most popular form of blue-green algae and one of the best vegetarian sources of protein (60%). Vanilla protein:Sunwarrior raw protein derived from peas, cranberries, hemp, natural fibres, vanilla, stevia and medium chain triglycerides. Wild edibles: seasonal greens, which grow biodynamically and contain no sprays or pesticides. If available, we use stinging nettles and dandelions, but could be anything from wild parsley and mint. Wheatgrass: we use fresh, raw and cold pressed wheatgrass juice. which is full of every vitamin, mineral, amino acid and beneficial enzyme. It's a potent detox agent and a blood purifier. Xylitol:a sugar derived from birch trees and the same stuff used in quality toothpastes, because it's not only safe for the teeth, it strengthens them
